Fresh-water Fish Chemoreceptors Responsive to Dilute Solutions of Electrolytes

چکیده
I N T R O D U C T I O N The palatal chemoreceptors of the carp display a rather peculiar type of response to varying concentrations of electrolytes (Konishi and Niwa, 1964). Dilute solutions of salts, especially those with polyvalent anions such as Na3citrate and Na 2 HP04 , produced strong responses. However, an increase in concentration depressed receptor activity, although the activity increased again at much higher concentrations. The response vs. concentration curve (concentration curve) obtained by recording an integrated response therefore displayed an inverse S-shape. The application of distilled water, immediately after the receptor had been irrigated by a salt solution at the concentration at which chemoreceptor activity was depressed, elicited a remarkable stimulatory response (distilled water effect (DWE)). Such an effect was not observed

The Mechanism of Sodium and Chloride Uptake by the Gills of a Fresh-Water Fish, Carassius auratus i. Evidence for an independent uptake of sodium and chloride ions
Carassius auratus placed in a dilute sodium chloride solution (400 gM) is able to absorb sodium and chloride ions at very different rates, or to absorb one ion and to lose the other. This is the case not only for fish which have been previously kept in choline chloride or sodium sulfate solutions or deionized water, in order to stimulate their absorption processes, but also in control fish whic...

The deposits of clinoptilolite (CLI) in Iran after activation with sodium chloride or sodium hydroxide solution was subjected to ion exchange with some heavy and toxic cations. The results showed that the absorption for Ca2+ (7.5 ppm), Cu2+ (50 ppm), Zn2+ (40 ppm), Cd2+ (40 ppm), Pb2+ (500 ppm) and Al3+ (5 ppm) were 95.2, 96.70, 93.30,99.12, 99.2 and 90.0 percents, respectively. The present study is undertaken to determine baseline levels of blood electrolytes for the fish, N.notopterus collected from three different aquatic bodies situated at different locations around Gulbarga region. The electrolytes such as sodium and potassium levels are having some difference in the fish collected from the three aquatic bodies. The data for blood Sodium 88.49 ± 16.68 mmol/l. in t...

Fresh-water teleosts, whose blood is hypertonic to the external medium (about 330 m-osmoles/kg. vs. a few m-osmoles/kg.), face the problem of osmotic entry of water and loss of electrolytes, while sea-water teleosts live in an environment (1150 m-osmoles/kg.) which induces osmotic loss of water and a diffusional influx of electrolytes. Many data are available on the electrolyte balance of fish ...
متن کاملHormonal Control of Osmoregulation in a Stenohaline Catfish, Ictalurus Punctatus
When channel catfish (lchtalurus punctatus) in fresh water (FW) were hypophysectomized, plasma osmolality decreased significantly after 24 hrs, and the maximum reduction was seen after 2 days. When they were transferred from FW to dilute seawater (20-40% SW), plasma osmolality of the sham-operated fish was consistently higher than the osmolality of the environmental water, whereas the osmolalit...
